Avoid fashion and beauty meltdowns

For much of the country, we’ve officially entered the dog days of summer, but you can beat the heat with style.
“Natural fabrics such as cotton, silk and linen always work best, as does dressing in light layered pieces such as chiffon tunics over tank tops, drawstring pants, dresses and other loose, flowy pieces,” recommends designer David Dixon.
Linen, although famous for wrinkling easily, is among the coolest of natural materials and is well suited to dress pants, jackets, dresses and tops. White and off-white are good colour choices, as they reflect rather than absorb the heat, but now is also the time to play along with the heat in bright tropical tones such as blue, violet, coral, fuchsia and yellow.
“To keep cool on those hot summery days, choose loose, flowy dresses as they allow the air to circulate to keep you from getting too hot,” advises Vancouver-based fashion designer Nicole Bridger.
And though you might prefer to strip off as much as possible, you can stay stylish while keeping your clothes on.
“Dressing for hot and humid weather does not necessarily mean showing more skin. Try a patterned tunic paired with white linen trousers and espadrilles for your next lunch meeting or slip on a chic jersey wrap dress and embellished gladiators for after-work drinks,” suggests Amy Lu, a stylist with Judy Inc. talent agency.
Lightweight separates such as sleeveless tunics, flounced skirts, shorts and Capri pants are among the many options that can be dressed up or down with accessories, such as scarves and belts. Keeping your accessories relatively lightweight and minimal can also help to keep you cool.”Get an assortment of belts to help control loose flowy pieces and give you shape. The lightness of tunics and blouses that swing away from the body can be given a whole new dimension with a great belt,” adds Dixon.
